Construction projects often bring surprises, and this one was no exception. During excavation for a new Central Co-op convenience store in Rainhill, Merseyside, the project team unearthed an unusual find - a 10-metre underground swimming pool hidden beneath the site.
Discoveries like these can present significant risks to programme and budget, but thanks to close collaboration between the client, contractor Krol Corlett and project team, progress has remained firmly on track.

The steel frame for the 4,000 sq ft store is now complete. The new store, set to open in January 2026, will feature an in-store bakery and a 16-space car park.
