Shelby project managed 10 Co-op food store refits within 2018. This included the refurbishment of Co-op Bilton Harrogate, Clitheroe’s Barrow Service Station, Llandudno Junction and Thurso.

Shelby was appointed as Project Manager and Contract Administrator on the refurbishment of Balloch, the largest mainland Co-operative Group food store in the UK at 27,000 square feet. It was a phased project, within a live store, over nine weeks to ensure trading disruptions were kept to a minimum.

The scope of works were new refrigeration plant, cabinets and cold-rooms; replacement of heating system and new layout to the sales area including new shelving, kiosk and self-service checkouts. There was a new ceiling inserted and lighting installed throughout.

The key challenges for Shelby included:

  • Ensuring the programme was kept on time, even when hit by severe weather that closed local roads for a week
  • Having to rescope due to budgetary restraints required once the project commenced
  • Ensuring quality of workmanship was maintained within such a large phased project
